FO & Giveaway: Knits That Breathe (so you’d better comment)

Before I announce the giveaway, allow me to show you a FO. It’s a quilt that I made for a co-worker of my husband — someone who has been undergoing some tough times and needs a reminder that not everyone is as big a jerk as her soon-to-be-ex-husband. I started out with a pack of Kaffe Fassett charm squares in blue that I got from the late, great Spool and added a few more random squares from my stash in order to make the quilt top larger.

I added a frame in denim blue and used a blue-green for the backing, both from the Kaffe Fassett shot cottons, which I dearly love,

then used some of the woven stripes for binding. I’ve really enjoyed playing around with printed fabric to make different effects in binding — and I like the way that the horizontal stripes make little bars around the edge in this one. (Striped fabrics also look great the other way round, or at angles, for binding.) I machined quilted horizontal lines that roughly aligned with the horizontal rows of blocks — because of all the glorious color in the blocks, I opted for simpler binding and quilting.

Now the giveaway: After my book review the other day, the lovely Julie Turjoman emailed me and kindly offered to giveaway a PDF or print copy of Knits That Breathe, winner’s choice, to one lucky commenter. So leave a comment on this post, making sure that there is a Ravelry ID or some other way for me to reach you (if I can’t find you, I’ll have to draw another name) and I’ll pick a winner on Friday, July 4th at noon, because JULIE TURJOMAN LOVES AMERICA.

  1. Your quilt is wonderful ~ one of these days I hope to learn ~ you’re a great inspiration!

I would love to be entered in the giveaway ~ I just found your blog this week and your book review was the first post I read. I added Julie’s book to my wishlist and now here you are giving away a copy.

  2. I love the patterns in Knits That Breathe. I would begin with Flutterbye, to be followed (quickly, I hope) by Pochette.
That’s a beautiful quilt. Perhaps one fine day I will learn how to sew well enough to create something like that, as I love the idea of working with such beautiful fabrics.

  3. Lovely quilt! I’ve been itching to try making a quilt. I think I’ve read every tutorial on the internet! Knitting always seems to win as my craft of choice though, probably because it’s more portable than a sewing machine and iron 🙂

  4. I would definitely make a project from knits that breathe if I win a copy. Loved your review. Eileen

  8. I thought you were giving away the quilt too haha!! But I’ll take the book if I’m lucky enough to win. I assume my name gives away who I am lol. Good luck to everyone!

  9. I was thinking that I would love that book but I’m such a slow knitter these days (toddler) I didn’t think I could justify buying it. But I’d love to win it! And I really like the quilt, I love the Kaffe Fassett fabrics – it turned out really nice!

  10. Beautiful quilt! Please enter me in the drawing.

A gratuitious photo of Boris would be nice, too!

  11. What a wonderful gift for someone going through hard times. I’m sure it will be treasured.

Just love your yarns. Am planning on displaying the ones I haven’t used yet in a basket so I can enjoy looking at them and touching them until I decide what I’m going to make with them.

  13. your quilt is beautiful! You are an amazing and generous person! Proud to have met you! HUGS!

  14. I love the quilt, and I know how much work goes into making one – I have made a few back in the day. Now I prefer lap-sized projects and so I went back to my other love-knitting. Knits that Breathe sound perfect for someone who is perpetually too warm 🙂 Judy11 on Rav

  15. I tried once, but found quilting was just not for me. I like knitting so much better as it is easier to rip out and reuse materials when I make mistakes.

Your quilt looks lovely, though, and your friend will be very luck to receive it.
